Life
Mobility
I work on the computer a lot and my posture isn't great. I am starting to make a conscious effort to correct this at the desk, but also when I'm off the computer: walking around, sitting on the couch, driving, etc. I'm trying to pay better attention to what my body is telling me, and take breaks to stretch and walk around during the day. You'd be surprised how fast a stressful work day can get you to slouch. Or maybe you wouldn't be surprised! Are you slouching right now?
More cooking at home
My GF moved in recently and we're both trying to be a lot better about cooking healthy at home. It is hard to keep up with. We're getting better at it, and I think it is just going to take some sustained practice. Most of the battle is just getting into a routine with deciding what you might want to cook on a week night and getting those groceries.
Drawing and Journaling
I used to do a little bit of journaling here and there, but I recently saw a video on YouTube from someone who suggested trying out a visual journal where drawings can be added to journal entries or as journal entries themselves. I've long been meaning to get back to taking art classes (I've taken a few drawing classes years ago) and this would be a fun way to get back into it.
Playing weird video games
I used to play quite a lot of video games. These days I don't have the time for some kind of triple-A time sink open world nonsense.
I do have time for strange independent games. I am trying to play a lot of those. I've got a small backlog to get through full of independent stuff.
Building a "read queue"
Anything I don't have time to read online I am bookmarking into a "Read Queue" folder. If I feel like I have some time to read an article - like a long form essay or magazine article - I'll take a look into my read queue and read it.
This is working a lot better than trying to keep 30 tabs open for an intederminate amount of time.
Growing my RSS feed list
Speaking of a "read queue", I am also growing the list of RSS feeds I subscribe to! Ideally I'd like to have a feed reader full of folks who I absolutely can't miss an update from. I'm on my way there!
Projects
Expanding the digital garden
I finished redesigning the site! I think I got things into a nice enough place where I could stop and release the dang thing. I didn't want to get stuck in a loop trying out ideas and continually tweaking it instead of actually working on building out the site. I can always come back later and expand on some ideas and experiement with some others. I talked a little bit about the design goals I had in the post, and I think I was largely successful in them. I've got much more flexibility in my 11ty site's page structure too.
Now that the design is finished I am focused on writing more blog posts and expanding the site into a digital garden and blog. I'm having a good time with the blog but it is a pretty rigid publishing format. I've seen a lot of really neat digital gardens while I was surfing around for some design inspo for my redesign and they inspired me to try some new things here on my own site.
Fun things are coming soon!
Learning the Go Language
I started learning the Go programming lanuage! I know Python reasonably well, and decided that I'd like to pick up a compiled language. Go seemed more simple to pick up than something like Rust, and is pretty well suited to web stuff.
Right now I am working on a little interpreter that will be able to evaluate dice rolling formulas for table top role playing games.
In the future, I'll make a guestbook for this website!
TTRPGs
I've got a few TTRPG things going on right now!
- I joined a DCC campaign that will be doing Caverns of Thracia. This is a really neat mega-dungeon. The group is pretty nice. We are all getting the hang of Fantasy Grounds still, but we're managing!
- I am trying to join a West Marches style Shadowdark campaign. Shadowdark is a real cool system and one I constantly hear a lot of great things about from players.
Outside of group play:
- I am doing a playthrough of Thousand Empty Light, and serializing the adventure into a "Let's Play" that will go up on this site once I finish. I am working on some custom CSS styles to match the game booklet. It is a survival horror RPG using the Mothership system. I got slightly bogged down learning Mothership, but thankfully the Mothership "Warden" manual is one of the best written game manuals I think I've ever used.
Etc
There is always more going on, but these are some of the highlights. Are you up to anything lately? Tell me what it is.
