This is the second installment of Internet Adventures.

In the previous episode I highlighted a few fantastic blogs. An internet astronaut such as yourself (my reader) knows that blogs aren’t the only cool things happening on the internet. For the this episode of internet adventures, I wanted to highlight some equally fantastic video creators/channels.

Around time of the first episode ([REDACTED] years ago) I was still trying to experiment with what kind of things I wanted to put up on the blog, and didn’t get around to writing another. Sharing links to things you enjoy with other people is one of the few little joys people online have these days, so here we are. Enjoy volume 2!

The Morbid Zoo

The Morbid Zoo is hosted by Mariana Colín. They write some fantastic and well researched mid and long form video essays about “monsters, media culture, misanthropology”. They are fun, funny, whip-smart, and offer anthropological and textual analysis that always leave me with a lot to think about after each video. I feel like I get my ideas challenged, and leave with a new fresh perspective about what is being discussed. I’ve especially enjoyed their series on monsters in Lord of The Rings (and monsters in the real world).

Red Letter Media

I’ve been watching Red Letter Media for ages. Ages! I think I’ve been watching them since they released the Star Wars prequel movie reviews.

The most recent video I’ve seen from the channel was a recap and review of the first season of the original Star Trek was really fun and is the kind of video they do lately that really keeps me coming back to their channel. I’m an enormous fan of “old” Star Trek just like the hosts of the show, and watching them goof around and talk about some of my favorite parts of the series is always really fun.

I started redularly watching their Half in the Bag series for the movie recommendations, and I keep coming back for the long form discussions on the things they love (and love to hate).

Every so often I will go back into their archive and watch some of the pandemic-era episodes of Half in the Bag and feel less crazy about how affecting pandemic was for everyone.

Interface Studies

Interface Studies is hosted by Saleh Kayyali. It is a YouTube channel focused on investigating and exploring “human interfaces, software, and digital culture”. I find human-computer interaction endlessly fascinating. I’m a web developer professionally and have spent a lot of time implementing interfaces for web sites and other things. Interface Studies breaks down the ideas behind the designs and demonstrates what makes them effective and especially what makes them defective. I’m not a designer, but I do use computers and computer programs constantly, so I find this channel super compelling.

Dungeon Chill

Dungeon Chill is a channel about video games (mostly!), but focused on the weird, esoteric, and wonderful oddities of video games. They do really - really - deep dives on some very fun and obscure stuff. The almost-three hour long video about Squaresoft’s racing RPG called Racing Lagoon is a great example of what you’re gonna get from Dungeon Chill.

They also do some videos covering indie games, and dungeon crawlers! My wheelhouse!
